  	Paul and brother Hermann joined their father Carl and their brother Charly at the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad yards in 1899. Paul worked as a boilermaker in Wilmington, in Philadelphia and later in New Orleans. While in New Orleans in 1913, he was offered a job with the United States Isthmian Canal Commission. He accepted their offer of "immediate employment (as) boilermaker ...Isthmus Panama ...sixty five cents (per) hour...free bachelor quarters... transportation free". Paul sailed for Panama on March 29, 1913 on board the steamer Turrialba. His wife Alice and their daughter Beatrice remained in the States. By 1920 Paul was employed by Traveler's Insurance Company. He remained with them until his retirement.
