  	Carl served as a soldier during the Franco - Prussian War. He was, most likely, in the 3rd Army, under the command of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm whose forces were made up of men from south Germany, supplemented by men from Silesia and Posen.

  	On 20 October 1894, Carl made oath on his son Hermann's U.S. Naturalization petition that he was a citizen of the United States.

  	Carl was employed as a grounds keeper, maintaining the gardens and stocked ponds of Schloss Volmerstein, the estate of Graf (Count) von der Recke-Volmerstein that was located near the town of Kraschnitz in Silesia, Prussia. Years later Carl’s daughter Anne would entertain her children with stories of their grandfather tossing fish from one pond into another in order to make an accurate count.

  	Carl found employment as a laborer with the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad in Wilmington, Delaware. And with the exception of a short stint as an inspector with a rubber hose company, Carl worked for the PW&B Railroad until his death in July 1921.

  	Carl died at at his home, 1409 Marsh Road in Wilmington, Delaware at 4:30pm on 16 July 1921. He had suffered from stomach cancer for two years, and by the time of his death at age 76 the cancer had metastasized.

  	His body was interred in the Gabriel family plot at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware on 19 July 1921.
