  	By 1899 Charly was working at the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad yards where his father, Carl, was employed. Charly worked at a number of other jobs during his lifetime: ice house laborer, hose inspector for the Electric Hose and Rubber Company, service man for a Wilmington public school. He was active in neighborhood politics and he enjoyed sports; particularly amateur boxing. He was a volunteer fireman for years.

  	Charly died at 5:30pm on 2 September 1965 at 1617 Scott Street, the Wilmington, Delaware home of his grandniece, Peg Murphy Elliott, with whom he boarded. He was 85 years old. Cause of death was noted as "metastasized prostate cancer" and generalized arteriosclerosis.

  	His remains were interred in the Gabriel family plot at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware on 4 September 1965.
