- A favorite memory that illustrates Wally's intense curiosity is his reaction to a spider we were set to kill. We found that a female black widow spider was living in our pump house. Wally, who was visiting with his family, got a mason jar and lid, and promptly trapped the spider and some web so that he could study her. PGF/9 Sep 2018

- He was the author of over 50 scientific papers, and received awards for distinguished service in the advancement of agriculture. In 2014 The University of Minnesota endowed the Wally Nelson Crop Production Faculty Chair.

- It was noted in his obituary that he was retired professor emeritus of the University of Minnesota and the founding Superintendent of the SW Experiment Station (Southwest Research and Outreach Center).
- After 6 years at the Duluth experiment station, Wally was chosen to start up the new experiment station in Lamberton. For the next 34 years he built it into one of the premier agricultural research facilities in the nation.
