  	Clide first enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 18 years 9 months on 18 Dec 1907 at Ft. Slocum, NY, for a period of 3 years. His occupation was listed as farmer, and he was described as having brown eyes and hair, being 5'6" tall with a ruddy complexion. He was assigned to Coastal Artillery Corps (C.A.C.), Company 14. He was listed as a Private living at the Ft. Greble Army Post in May 1910. Clide was discharged from the Army 7 Dec 1910 at Ft. Greble, RI. He re-enlisted on 30 Dec 1910 at Ft. Caswell (Oak Island, NC). He was 21 years 9 months old and still listed farmer as occupation. The only description change was in height, 5'9 1/2" tall. He was assigned to Coastal Artillery Corps (C.A.C.), Company 19. Clide was discharged at Ft. Caswell on 29 Dec 1913 as a Private at the completion of his 3-year enlistment. U.S. Army Returns received by the Adjutant General's Office which reported regiment strength and accounted for each man in the regiment, reported that Pvt. Clide S. Batts was with the 1st Infantry on February 28, 1914, and on May 30, 1914, was being transferred to Coastal Artillery Corps, 105th Company. In 1930 Clide was listed as a U.S. Army soldier stationed in Texas.
