  	Elmer enlisted in Norfolk, VA, and served as a United States Navy serviceman in the North Atlantic. He achieved the rating/rank of ETRC, Electronics technician (radio), Chief Petty Officer. He served on the USS Schenck (DD-159). He was the Chief Radioman (RM1C). The Schenck was a sister ship to USS Leary (DD-158) which was torpedoed and sunk on 24 Dec 1943. Elmer worked on the signal bridge identifying bodies in the water as his destroyer picked up survivors. Crews of the Schenck and Leary formed a bond that night, and had reunions through the early 2000s.
