The 1897 and 1898 Birmingham City directories state that John was the furnace manager for Sloss-Sheffield Steele & Iron Company at their North Birmingham facility. The 1898 directory additionally indicates that he served as the vice-president of Means & Fulton Iron Works, a company incorporated in 1897. His brother, Preston, was president of the company.
