  	On 27 October 1886, from his home in Wytheville, Virginia, John made application for admission to the Ex-Confederate Soldiers' Home in Richmond, Virginia. He claimed disability from rheumatism and neuralgia due to "exposure" during his years of service in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. His application for admission was approved on 14 December 1886, and he was notified of his acceptance on 15 December 1886. He, apparently, then changed his mind. His application is marked "Dropped" and the Register notes "dropped November 22, 1887".
