  	On 6 December 1652, "Joane Yates, Wid[ow]" patented 200 acres of land at the head of the West Neck Branch of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Lower Norfolk County. The patent was granted in exchange for a certificate of importation listing four headrights.

  	Three months later, on 9 March 1652/3, Joane received a patent for an additional 300 acres of property in Lower Norfolk County; this for the transportation of six people into the Virginia Colony. This land was repatented by Joane on 20 October 1661.

  	Joane made a complaint against her son Richard Yates in Lower Norfolk County Court on 15 April 1653, demanding her "dower rights" in her deceased husband's estate and the use of the "Chiefe man'con house" on the property for life. The complaint was referred to the next meeting of the Court. As no further has been found concerning this dispute in the Court records, it is likely that the arguemnt was settled between the mother and son themselves.

  	Joane brought suit in Lower Norfolk County Court during 1660/1661 against Thomas Lovell for "ill treatment" of her 4 Horne grandchildren. Following the death of Joane's daughter, Mary Yates Horne, Thomas Horne had married the Widow Riglesworth, who at Horne's death had married Thomas Lovell as her third husband. This series of marriages and deaths left the four children of Thomas & Mary Yates Horne and their inheritances in the hands of two step-parents. In 1662, Thomas Lovell was ordered by the Court to give up the estates of the four Horne children.

  	Joane's will appointed her "sonne Richard Yates and likewise my Daughter Frances Vallentine my full and whole Executors". She signed the will by mark on 21 October 1664. Her mark and seal were witnessed by William Ritchford, Martha Hallam, John Swaine, John Efreag and William Mortene.
