  	In 1837 Robert was commissioned as Justice of the Peace of Montgomery County, Virginia.

  	In July 1861, Robert was appointed a colonel of the 28th Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America, with whom he served until the infantry's reorganization in April 1862. In August 1864 he was appointed as a lieutenant colonel, and then a colonel of the 4th Virginia Reserves. On 26 April 1865 he and his men surrendered with the troops of General Joseph E. Johnston to General William T. Sherman in North Carolina.

  	Robert died in 1880. He was approximately 71 years of age at the time of his death.
