  	Richard was one of the volunteers. He was awarded the Croix e Guerre by the French Government for extraordinary heroism in his capacity as an ambulance driver. During World War I, from 1914 to 1918, young American college boys flocked to France to volunteer as ambulance drivers. Funded by private charities and deep-pocket philanthropists, Model T. Fords and their "gentlemen volunteer" drivers clattered through shellfire and mud to transport the wounded to medical aid and safety.

  	After the war, Richard returned to his studies and graduated from the University of Virginia and from Virginia Theological Seminary.
