  	The Virginia Defenders, Company C, Sixteenth Virginia Regiment was organized at Portsmouth on the night of 20 April 1861, the night of the governer's call for volunteers. Thomas was elected 3rd Lieutenant of Company C that evening. In April 1862, one year after the original muster of Company C into service, Thomas was made its Captain.

  	He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Bristoe Station on 14 October 1863. Thomas died the following day. He was 35 years old at the time of his death.

  	His body was interred at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia.
