  	Paul entered the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as a freshman during the fall of 1940. During the next two and a half years, he studied toward a degree in mechanical engineering.

  	On 11 April 1943, Paul was called to active military service with the 1469th Army Air Forces Base Unit at Knoxville, Tennessee. He had enlisted in the Reserve Corps of the Army on 4 August 1942. During the following 16 months he received training at Army Air bases in Alabama, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska and Arizona. On 14 July 1944, a Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber being utilized as a training craft out of Davis-Monthan Army Air Field in Tucson, Arizona crashed. The pilot, co-pilot and navigator were killed, and five crew members, including Paul, were injured. Paul's injuries were minor, consisting mainly of torn chest cartilage. 19 October 1944 found Paul at Marks Army Air Field in Nome, Alaska where the 1469th AAFBU of the U.S. Air Transport Command was stationed. The base was used by Air Transport Command as a refueling and servicing airfield for Lend-Lease aircraft being flown to Siberia by Soviet Red Air Force pilots. He worked as an Air Operations Specialist at Marks Field for the duration of the Asiatic-Pacific war. He left Alaska on 28 September 1945, 26 days after the signing of the formal surrender agreement by the Japanese. He arrived home in Richmond, Virginia on 8 December 1945 and received his discharge at Richmond Army Air Base on 12 December 1945.

  	Upon his return to civilian life, Paul found employment at DuPont's Spruance Rayon Plant in Richmond, Virginia. He worked there for a year, starting 21 January 1946 and resigning 27 December 1946.

  	On 31 December 1946, he returned to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with the intention of completing his degree in mechanical engineering. He was back in Richmond after only one semester.

  	Once back in Richmond, Paul returned to work as a draftsman at the DuPont Rayon Plant. In 1952 he was transferred to DuPont's Dacron Plant in Kinston, North Carolina. He worked in Industrial Engineering until 1961, when he was moved to Production Planning, where he remained until his retirement in January 1975.

  	Paul died of cardio-respiratory arrest at 10:35am on 4 April 1975 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, North Carolina. His death was the result of metastatic breast cancer. Paul was 52 years old at the time of his death.
