  	The first mention of George in the Virginia Colony concerns his appearance before the Lower Norfolk County Court on 20 January 1647/8. The Court directed that George"pay unto Henry Merritt 40 l tob for unjust molestacon".

  	Though the date of George's purchase of land in Lower Norfolk County is unknown, that ownership is made clear by the following description taken from the 24 November 1657 land patent of Mr. Thomas Bridge. "In Linn haven Parish, bounded W.S.W. with Mr. Hogskins Cr., N.W. upon the land of Georg Ashwell.....".

  	According to several entries in the Lower Norfolk County Court records, George made his living as a shoemaker and tanner. A 15 June 1663 entry reads "Att this Court It was fully agreed betweene y gent ye Comrs. and George Ashall Tanner, yt ye sd George Ashall shall Erect and Maintanye a County Tanhouse accordinge to Act of Assembly duering his life, or the Act in force."

  	George's will states that he was "of ye little Creek in Linhaven parish in ye County of Lower Norfolk". It names his wife Mary as his sole executrix, and his friend George Fowler as overseer of his estate. George signed his will on 1 September 1671. His signature and seal were witnessed by Thomas Bridge, Edward Bragger and George Stevens.
