  	Oliver and his cousin John Heald were chosen as road surveyors at Temple's second town meeting which was held on 10 October 1768. In 1769 Oliver served as a Selectman.

  	He enlisted in the Continental Army at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, and on 19 April 1775 he marched to the alarm at Concord, Massachusetts. Before the men from Temple arrived at Concord, the British had retreated, and the Temple troops proceeded to Cambridge.

  	Oliver was appointed constable in 1776 and served as a Selectman for a second time in 1777.
