- Following the early deaths of their parents, the girls were raised by their maternal grandmother, Virginia Ann Prince Barham. When Mrs. Barham passed, they were taken in by a maternal uncle. All of the girls attended the State Normal School for Women [Longwood College] and received teaching certificates.
