  	Thomas Hosmer was among Rev. Hookers congregation, and as such was one of the original settlers of Hartford. In the first allotment of town land, Thomas was given 60 acres. In 1636, the Rev. Thomas Hooker led 100 of his congregation West to found a new English settlement at Hartford in what would soon be the Connecticut Colony. One of the reasons that the group left Massachusetts was their belief that any adult male who owned property should have the right to vote and participate in civil government, regardless of church membership. The government of Massachusetts held that only admitted male members of the Church should vote and hold office.
