  	In 1561 John was granted a lease of "the suit and demesne lands of the manor of Stanton St. John." This property was one of the estates owned by New College of Oxford University. The living of this parish was held, according to custom, by the Warden [president] of New College who from 1553 until 1573 was Dr. Thomas White, uncle of John. The grey stone house into which John moved his family was known as the Manor Farm House. That house still stands today, and it has been continuously occupied for at least 450 years.
