- John died of broncho pneumonia at 5:00 pm at his home on Queen Street. According to Dr. West, the pneumonia was caused by influenza that John had contracted about nine days earlier. John was 38 years old at the time of his death.
- As World War I was ending in autumn 1918, the flu season was marked by a virulent strain of influenza virus. From 1918 through 1919, this deadly flu was transmitted rapidly across the globe, infecting 1/4 of the U.S. population and 1/5 of the world's. This flu was unusual in that it was most deadly in young and healthy people ages 20-40. The virus was noted for its sudden onset of symptoms, often causing death within days. The impact of this pandemic, including societal disruption, was experienced globally.
