  	Ernst was living and working in Wilmington, Delaware by January 1889.

  	Ernst was killed at 6:30am on 9 January 1889 while attempting to board the Workman's train for Edge Moor where he was employed. Apparently late, he and a friend darted across the tracks at Landlith Station in front of P.W.& B. freight train #41. Ernst was struck by the southbound train and killed instantly. The accident occurred within sight of the Forrest Street house where he boarded. He was 15 years old at the time of his death.
