- Hermann enlisted in the US Army on 26 Mar 1943 at Binghamton, NY. He served as a private from 2 April 1943 until 26 Sep 1945, when he was honorably discharged. The details of Hermann's service are no longer extant, as they were among the files at the NPRC in St. Louis that were destroyed by a fire on 12 July 1973.
- It is of interest to note, however, that Hermann's enlistment record states the following on 26 Mar 1943: Marital Status: Separated, without dependents.
