- The 1860 census enumerates James as a "Junr Cabinet maker", residing in the home of cabinet maker David H. Stayton of Murderkill Hundred in Kent County, Delaware.

- On 31 October 1861, James enlisted in the 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. He was mustered-in as a private on 14 December 1861 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Two years later, he re-enlisted at Bealton Station, Virginia. James was promoted to corporal on 12 December 1864. He was mustered-out of service on 13 July 1865 at Cloud's Mills, Virginia, three months after General Lee's surrender to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia.
- With the exception of two short periods when he was hospitalized, James participated in each of the Civil War battles in which the 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry fought, including the Battle of Gettysburg, fought 1 July through 3 July 1863.

- After the war, James returned to carpentry and cabinet making as a profession. He practiced his trade in Wilmington, Delaware. During 1894 and 1895 he was listed as a "shoe maker" in the Wilmington City Directory. The 1896 directory noted him once again as a "carpenter".

- James died on 4 August 1896 in New Castle County, Delaware. He was 51 years old at the time of his death. Cause was noted as "softening of brain", ie. a cerebral hemorrhage/stroke.
