  	During August 1863, Turner, at the tender age of 8 years and 7 months, became a "marker" or spotter for Wheeler's Dragoons, C.S.A. He continued in that capacity until 26 April 1864.

  	Turner entered Georgia state military service as a Private in the Richmond Hussars on 7 March 1873. During the ensuing 21 years, he rose in rank and was promoted to Lieut-Colonel and aide-de-camp on 4 December 1894. He held these positions until his retirement on 29 October 1898.
