  	He was minister of Kehukee Baptist Church, Halifax Co, NC from 1768 until 2 May 1772, when he resigned this pastorate to assume one in Virginia. As early as 1770, John had preached frequently in the Sussex County, VA home of Henry Bailey, near High Hills Run, and that of Henry Andrews, in the neighborhood of Raccoon Swamp. On 13 Jun 1772 the Church of Raccoon Swamp (later called Antioch) was planted, and John became its first minister. By the time of his 1794 resignation as pastor at Raccoon Swamp, John had been instrumental in the planting of Mill Swamp Church in Isle of Wight Co. (1774) and in the planting of Meherrin Church (now Hebron) in Southampton Co. (1788). He had also served as moderator of the Kehukee Association for 20 years, and as moderator for the Portsmouth Baptist Association for four years.

  	John's will appointed his son John as executor. He signed his will on 15 May 1797. His signature and seal were witnessed by William Newsum, Peter Simmons and Robert Myrick.

  	In January 1800 the Court in Southampton County, Virginia ordered an appraisement of Elder John Meglamre's estate. The inventory was carried out by William Chambliss, Frederick Parker and Richard P. Clements, and it was presented and recorded on 19 May 1800.

  	At a Court held for Southampton County, Virginia on 20 January 1800, John's will was proved by the oaths of William Newsum and Robert Myrick, two of the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded.
  reinterment	7 Jun 1999	Yale, Sussex Co, VA   [5]
  	On 7 June 1999, the remains of John and his wife Letty were exhumed and moved to Antioch Baptist Church in Yale, Virginia. There they were reinterred in front of the monument that had been erected in John's honor in 1932. The new grave site was dedicated during a special gathering and reception at the church at 4:00pm on 13 June 1999.

• Notes

  On 12 Jun 1932, the 160th anniversary of the constituting of the Antioch Church, a memorial service was held "to commemorate the worth and deeds of this great man who labored so faithfully." A monument was unveiled in front of the church for which he had given the land. A slab was also set on his grave at his old farm, near Joyner, VA.
