  	Edward was born before November 1656. Proof of this is his 3 November 1677 entry into a Middlesex County, Virginia lease, a legal conveyance which required that he be at least 21 years of age.

  	The first mention of Edward in the extant records of the Virginia Colony is as a soldier on the active duty roster of the Middlesex County Militia, dated 10 July 1676. The militia was on active duty in response to the outbreak of civil unrest that would later be known as Bacon's Rebellion.

  	Edward served as constable for Middlesex County from April 1684 until May 1686. A decade later he was again appointed constable, serving from May 1696 until May 1699. The job of constable in 17th century Virginia was to execute the orders and decrees of the local court and of the Virginia General Assembly, to act as a conservator of peace and to arrest all those who were guilty of crimes and disorderly conduct.
