- Joseph enlisted as a private on March 26, 1862 at Portsmouth, VA for a three year period. He joined Capt. Owens Co G, 9th Virginia Infantry. On July 3, 1863, he was taken prisoner by the Yankee forces during Picket's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 6th he appeared on the POW record of Fort McHenry, MD under the confinement of Gen. Schenck. According to the record he was sent to Fort Delaware, DE that same month. Joseph remained a POW at Fort Delaware until the end of the War. His name and description (Complexion: ruddy: Hair: light; Eyes: Blue; Height: 5'7") appear on an Oath of Allegiance to the United States sworn to at Fort Delaware on April 20, 1865.
