5576	Extant records of Accomack Co, VA show the surname as: Van Netsin/Vanilsin /Fonelson /Vanelson /Vannelson /Venelson /Verenlson. The prefix "van" suggests Flemmish or southern Dutch origins. The phonetic spelling of Vanelson as Fonelson, would suggest the same, as "V" is pronounced as "F". The phonetic spelling of Gausalin as Husalin reinforces the Flemmish or southern Dutch origins, as "G" is pronounced as "H". The earliest record concerning this family which I have located is a 16 Aug 1663 entry in the Accomack Co. Court Orders concerning Gausalin & Briget Van Nitsen. They were ordered to "appear at the next court" on a charge of fornication; an interesting charge, as the couple was married at the time. However, the arrival of a child too soon after marriage routinely subjected the parents to such a charge. At present, I have two Accomack Co. Vernelson lines in the data base. As Baptist churches reject the practice of infant baptism, in favor of believer baptism, it is more likely that the children were welcomed into the congregation of a Baptist church that their parents' had recently joined.
